Cake bake competition for chefs and cooks working in residential care homes

As part of this year's Dying Matters week there is going to be a Cake Bake Competition, offering chefs and cooks who work in residential care homes across Norfolk and Waveney the chance to show off their baking skills.

Every year in May the national Dying Matters coalition hosts an Awareness week to encourage all of us to start thinking and talking about death and dying as a part of our shared community life. In 2020 there will be an information event at the Forum in Norwich on 7th May ahead of Dying Matters Awareness week, hosted by the Norfolk and Waveney Collaborative for End of Life and Palliative Care, in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support.

There is going to be a Dying Matters Cake Bake Competition, offering chefs and cooks who work in residential care homes across Norfolk and Waveney the chance to show off their baking skills. Richard Hughes, award winning Chef Director of The Assembly House in Norwich will judge the competition.

There are three different cake categories:

  • A nine-inch decorated sponge or fruit cake
  • The Cup Cake Challenge: five cup cakes, iced or decorated, all five to be of the same design and flavour
  • Dietary specific: Either a nine-inch sponge or fruit cake or five identical cup cakes which are created for a free-from diet, such as gluten-free, sugar-free, low sugar, dairy-free, vegan and so forth.

The winner of each category will win an Afternoon Tea for Two voucher courtesy of The Assembly House.

For the overall winner, Chef Richard Hughes and his kitchen team will travel to the winner’s workplace to create a spectacular lunch, served to staff and residents by The Assembly House front of house team (terms and conditions apply).
