Update: PHE guidance re discharge

Publich Health England (PHE) has issued updated advice for care providers re discharge from hospital

The PHE advice for care providers re discharge from hospital is:

  • There isn’t capacity for testing of care home residents on discharge from NHS settings
  • If a person is asymptomatic and medically fit, they can be discharged
  • If they subsequently develop symptoms, they should be isolated
  • Care homes need to accept asymptomatic patients back into their care without a negative test. (Having a test at one point in time only tells you what the result is then – a person could return to their care home, be incubating and test positive the next day)
  • For patients who have had a positive test in hospital – if they are post 7 days from onset of symptoms and medically fit to be discharged, they can return to their care home of residence
